Traffic congestion is becoming more and more common in urban areas. What are the causes? What solutions can be adopted to solve this problem?

• population and economic growth => more people have personal means of transport => Example: car => overloaded roads

• overdevelopment in urban areas => mass transit system is overcrowded/ underdeveloped => Example: bus 

• heavy car tax imposition or congestion pricing => reduce the number of personal vehicles => Example: New York

• develop public transport system => Example: convenient subway line or bus route => deter commuters from using cars

Many reasons can be given to explain why traffic congestion is happening regularly in cities. To begin with, due to the growth of population and the economic boom, more city dwellers are owning their personal means of transport. Cars, for example, are gaining in popularity thanks to its convenience, which contributes significantly to the fact that roads are overloaded. As far as inadequate infrastructure is concerned, overdevelopment in urban areas where the mass transit system is already overcrowded or underdeveloped should not be overlooked. This can be exemplified clearly in Vietnam where the only mode of public transport available is bus.

However, several solutions can be adopted to solve this issue. The most straightforward attempt would be reducing the number of personal vehicles occupying the road, especially automobiles, through a series of legislation such as heavy car tax imposition or congestion pricing. Perhaps we can clearly see the positive outcomes of this approach in New York, the most populous city in America. The other answer to this issue is to develop a good public transportation system. In fact, if public bodies want to deter commuters from using their cars, they have to give them better options, for example, a convenient subway line or at least, a direct bus route.
