Introduction: The educational value of history is a topic which sparks great controversy. Although I understand why some people support the view that there is nothing we can learn from the past which can be used in today's life, I still believe history can provide us with useful information about modern society.

There are several reasons why people believe that historical knowledge is irrelevant to modern life. The first reason for this is that as society is continuously developing at a fast pace, most knowledge in the past has become irrelevant and outdated. For example, lessons about how delayed communication leading to losses in World War II is not relatable anymore since multiple methods to send messages quickly, including the Internet, were invented. In addition, some historical values are no longer appropriate for daily life. This can be exemplified by the traditional view that men are superior to women, a viewpoint which has been dismissed in modern life.

Nevertheless, I am in favour of the opinion that we can learn several things from historical events for several reasons. Firstly, there are lessons from the past which people can learn to help them avoid making the same mistakes in the future. For example, history has recorded how too fast a development can lead to considerable environmental damage. Taking this lesson into account, modern people are now becoming more aware of the environmental consequences that their actions may bring. Secondly, learning about past struggles can help modern people appreciate the peaceful and convenient lives they have today. Teaching Vietnamese students about the war, for instance, can be a great way to instill a sense of patriotism in them.
